Sakurambo is in season at LUPICIA!
Jewel of Japan
Sakurambo means fruit of the sakura or cherry blossom tree, the national flower of Japan. Both are members of the same family, the distinction lies in that the cherry blossom tree does not produce fruit, while the "sakurambo" cherry tree does.
Unlike the deep, dark red bing cherries that are popular in the U.S., Japanese cherries are a vibrant red. Coined the ruby of early summer, succulent Japanese cherries are known the world over as some of the best. Over 70 percent of Japanese cherries are cultivated in Yamagata Prefecture. Japanese cherries are very delicate and easily damaged, and so each one must be individually handpicked. These cherries are not simply displayed and packaged in miniature, plastic baskets as they are here in the U.S. At their most decadent the cherries are instead displayed in handcrafted wooden boxes. Each individual cherry is given special attention, and only the most perfect are chosen for sale and display. A box of these cherries can run upwards of $275 USD.
Delicate Flavor
Japanese cherries are unique among other varieties because of their sweet-tart flavor, and their lovely aroma. They possess a slight tartness that helps to balance out the sweetness, and creates an amazingly complex flavor. The first year the SAKURAMBO blend was released in LUPICIA, it was the number one seller, and has remained in the top 10 ever since.
